Losing body fat is all about burning more calories than you take in. The medium intensity workouts at 70 to 80% of your MHR, 119 to 136 bpm for the 50 year old man/woman, will burn more calories than the FBZ per minute. Aim at completing 40 minutes of exercise, or more. You can do this all at a medium intensity or as interval training. More on this in part 3. For photos, updates and tips click here. .....First of all lets look at the MHR (maximum heart rate). This is 220-your age. So for a 50 year old man/woman, this is 170 bpm (beats per minute). The well known FBZ (fat burning zone) is between 60 & 70% of your MHR. For the 50 year old this would mean getting your heart rate between 102 and 119 bpm whilst exercising. At this level you could carry on a conversation, sing and not really get hot and sweaty. This is great if you are just starting out, but there are better ways. Look out next week for Part 2. The food industry was told years ago by researchers, that sugar, fat and salt were bad for health. Food giants and farmers were making a lot of money out of HFCS so ignored the research on sugar and chose to make, promote and sell low-fat foods. In doing so, they added more sugar or HFCS to make the now tasteless foods "tasty". To read article click here. Do you eat more if the food contains sugar and not know when to stop? In typical media style of course, it had extracted one or two phrases from a report today. To read it all, click here. What the report actually said, and quite rightly, was that for middle-aged people who have lost their fitness, to suddenly start jogging can be harmful. It goes on to say jogging is a good form of exercise and if you haven’t exercised for a while and want to start jogging, start walking first and build up slowly - exactly like the programme I started posting here 4 weeks ago….. The article also goes on to say that sugar is significantly more harmful to our health than fat….. I’ll be posting more on this subject soon.
